"Celebrating Works in Progress"
• RESPONDING TO: HC Goal 2: Holy Child Schools live, learn, and worship as a dynamic Catholic community.
• Lesson Title: Celebrating Works in Progress – Iconography in Oil
In this contemplative exploration, students are creating intimate, 4x4 oil-on-board paintings from life, inspired by a statue of Mary in the Holy Child Rye courtyard. This exercise is more than an observation; it is an immersion into both technical mastery and spiritual reflection. The small scale invites intense focus on each brushstroke, while the subject—a symbol of grace, faith, and maternal compassion—offers a profound anchor. Echoing Abbot Suger (a prominent figure in the French court and an early champion of Gothic architecture who oversaw the reconstruction of Saint-Denis Abbey in Paris in the 1130s and '40s), students are encouraged to experiment with blues. These "works in progress" embody not only artistic growth and development but also the community's shared journey of faith, celebrating Holy Child Goal 2: To "live, learn, and worship as a dynamic Catholic community."
