Over the summer, nine students from four Holy Child Network high schools gathered at the School of the Holy Child in Rye, New York, for five days of service, learning, and fun. Throughout the week, students explored issues such as food and housing insecurity, poverty, and loneliness while working with local community organizations.
The group began their service at POTS (Part of the Solution) in the Bronx, where they sorted and packed food for local families. Afterward, they enjoyed a visit to Arthur Avenue for some Italian food and cannolis!
Students also spent a day exploring New York City. Their adventures included visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, taking a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty, attending Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and enjoying a Broadway performance of & Juliet.
The final day of service took place at The Fuller Center, an organization that provides affordable housing and helps improve local neighborhoods. Students rolled up their sleeves to clean and paint a wall, build a bench, sort wire, and cut copper pipe. Inspired by CEO Jim Killoran and his team’s commitment to “Actions Not Words,” students saw firsthand how small acts of service can make a difference.
The week ended with a visit to Walter’s Hot Dogs and a special afternoon playing BINGO with the retired Sisters at Marian Woods.
More than a service trip, the experience gave students the opportunity to build friendships across the Holy Child Network, learn from their community partners, and put their faith into action.
Bravo to these students for a wonderful week of service, connection, and living out the Holy Child mission through Actions Not Words!
